Nothing But Thieves Chester Concert reviews
Performers were great - venue...not so much
I really like both Nothing But Thieves and Jill Scott and was thrilled to see them. Both of them were fantastic, and I was not let down.
Jill, as usual, was herself, and her hair and outfit were exceptional. She went through a good portion of her collection, offering a nice mix. Her finest work was covered, which is often not the case with the most played songs.
I feel that Nothing But Thieves had a slightly lacking setlist. They stuck to the popular hits and didn't even cover their latest album completely! However, the high energy compensated for the average selection. The performer had to switch his sweat-soaked shirts a minimum of 4 times.
To me, the biggest disappointment of the evening was the venue itself. The United Center is an excellent spot for watching the Bulls and Blackhawks, or perhaps a full-on pop or hip-hop show like Jay-Z. I believe that Jill Scott and Nothing But Thieves would be better suited for a more intimate location, such as the Chicago theater.
The UC is just too large to fully appreciate the Neo-Soul genre. The sound quality was poor and distorted, the engineering was subpar, though managing the soundboard in such a vast space would be challenging. That's why I had to rate the concert 3 stars. If you ever catch these artists live, opt for a smaller venue or invest in a $200 floor ticket for a closer experience.
